Title: | LZmL_35 - Dawn Mist #1, Luapula River, D R Congo - Zambia Border |
Caption: | First light on a remote part of the Luapula River. The river's rapids at high water, the cold of a July night, and a gold-tinted sunrise combine in a scene reminiscent of the style of romantic landscape painter William Turner. (As I looked at this magical scene, I almost expected one of Turner's paddle steamers to emerge from the mist.) Zambia's abundant water resource arises as a result of the country's location astride the Zambezi-Congo Watershed - Central & West Africa's two massive river systems. The Luapula River drains the Congo Basin waters of northern Zambia's plateau lands. The river outflows from the vast wetlands of the Chambeshi Floodplain (the source of the Congo River), Lake Bangweulu and the Bangweulu Swamps, running south and then eventually turning west and north to form the border between D R Congo and northern Zambia. At Zambia's most north-westerly border with D R Congo, the Luapula forms the huge expanse of Lake Mweru. Its waters outflow from Lake Mweru to eventually join the Congo River, before continuing on into the Atlantic Ocean. |
