| Caption: | The first light of a new day touches the ever-present spray cloud of this Queen of the World's waterfalls. Livingstone was assisted in his travels in this area by the Makolola chief, Sekeletu. Livingstone, the chief and some 200 African tribesmen left Linyanti for Old Sesheke in November 1855, on their way to visit the great waterfall as part of Livingstone's journey to the East Coast of Africa. As they journeyed, the Chief said to Livingstone: "Do you have smoke that roars in your country?" This photograph shows the sort of view David Livingstone saw, one day in mid-November 1855, as he travelled downriver to see the Mosi oa Tunya ('Smoke that Roars') for the first time. He was making the short canoe trip from Kalai to the island on the lip of the Falls. Later, the ever-observant Livingstone wrote lyrically about his impressions of this day; of this Zambezi river; and of the distant spray clouds rising from the great waterfall. His appreciation and love for the nature of Africa is clear: "After twenty minutes sail from Kalai we came in sight, for the first time, of the columns of vapor appropriately called "smoke", rising at a distance of five or six miles... They were white below and higher up became dark, so as to simulate smoke very closely. The whole scene was extremely beautiful; the banks and islands dotted over the river are adorned with sylvan vegetation of great variety of color and form ... several trees were spangled with blossom ... There, towering over all, stands the great burly baobab, each of whose enormous arms would form the trunk of a large tree, beside a group of graceful palms, which with their feathery-shaped leaves depicted on the sky, lend their beauty to the scene. As a hieroglyphic they always mean "far from home", for one can never get over their foreign air in a picture or landscape... Some trees resemble the great spreading oak, others assume the character of our own elms and chestnuts; but no one can imagine the beauty of the view from any thing witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.". |
