| Title: | LZmS_747 - Dusk, Mosi oa Tunya, Zambezi River, S Zambia |
| Caption: | "... no one could perceive where the vast body of water went; it seemed to lose itself in the earth ..." David Livingstone, 1858 "Picture yourself a stupendous perpendicular rent in a mass of basaltic rock, extending more than a mile (scarcely half of which, however, is visible) and only sixty to one hundred and twenty yards wide, right across the river, from one end to the other, into which pours this mighty river - roaring, foaming and boiling." James Chapman - South Africa hunter, trader, explorer & photographer - 1868 When in full flood, the Zambezi's huge volume of water drops some 100m into the Victoria Falls' chasm. This displaces the air and powers the water vapour far into the air above. This falls again as mist, and then runs down the chasm sides as water again, only to be propelled back up again, seemingly in a never ending cycle. |
