| Caption: | A common surface plant which covers many lagoons in the Luangwa Valley. Also know as "water lettuce", it performs the important function of preventing water loss due to evaporation. It is also thought to outcompete algae for nutrients in the water, thus preventing harmful over-production of algae. Due to its fast-growing infestation of man-made waterways and dams, it is considered an invasive pest. But in the Luangwa Valley this tendency seems to be somewhat controlled by the annual flooding of the Luangwa River. |
