Description
Title: | LMw_53 - High Plateau Grasslands, Nyika Plateau, NE Zambia / NW Malawi. |
Caption: | Nyika Plateau is part of the Great African Rift system, and a block tableland towering some 700m above and between the upper reaches of Zambia's Luangwa Valley to the West and some 1000m above Malawi's South Rukuru Valley to the East. Nyika is a largely uninhabited wilderness extending across a huge area of over 3000 sq km. The plateau's high altitude - from 2,200m (7,300ft) to its highest point at 2,606m (8,551ft) - makes it a vast undulating, montane grassland interspersed with evergreen, relic rainforest, with high rainfall and cool climate. The Nyika National Park covers some 1,210 sq km of the plateau. Most of the park is within Malawi, with a small part extending into Zambia - although visitors are able to wander freely throughout the park, unfettered by national boundaries and border controls. This unique habitat also gives home to a wide variety of wildlife and flora including many endemic species and sub-species. However, poaching has taken its toll on the once-plentiful numbers of large game species. |
