Title: | LZmS_6367 - After Baines #2, Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, S Zambia |
Caption: | After being dismissed from Livingstone's 1858 expedition, the artist Thomas Baines returned to the Zambezi and the Victoria Falls on his own expedition in 1862. He was accompanied by the South African hunter, trader, explorer and photographer, James Chapman. It was an epic journey from Cape Town, taking them some 16 months to get to the Victoria Falls - first by sea to Walvis Bay, then by ox-wagon across the waterless Kalahari desert region to Lake Ngami (in what is now Botswana), then onwards to the Zambezi valley. Baines went to Victoria Falls intending to find Livingstone, to confront him over his previous unfair dismissal and clear his name. But Livingstone had already moved on. It was on this expedition that Baines then spent some 12 days at Victoria Falls working on his very fine and acclaimed paintings of the great waterfall and nearby scenery. He completed most of the paintings (watercolours and oils) whilst journeying on an arduous return trip - due to excessive rains that year. An album of prints of Baines' work was published by Day & Son in London in 1865 in a set of 11 chromolithographs and 8 pages of descriptive text called "Victoria Falls, Zambesi River: sketched on the spot". They gave to the World the first artistic impressions of the unknown interior of Africa. The Baines-Chapman 1862 expedition was the first to be based on a collaboration of painting and photography, but Chapman had technical problems with his camera equipment, which, sadly, prevented him from producing any photography of the Zambezi & Victoria Falls part of their journeys. |
