Title: | LZmS_362V- Danger Point, Rainbow Falls & Rainbow, Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, S Zambia |
Caption: | This cataract, in the middle of the 1.7km wide Victoria Falls, is known as "Rainbow Falls". The island that can be seen in the background, on the lip of the chasm is "Livingstone's Island", which is so named due to it being the point from which David Livingstone first had sight of the falls in November 1855, although Livingstone himself originally called it 'Garden Island' after he, rather ambitiously, planted peach stones, apricot stones and coffee seeds there. The blue-flowering plant that can be seen in the foreground is a rare species of lobelia, Kirk's Lobelia or Lobelia kirkii, which is endemic to the constantly-wet, spray cloud habitat of the Victoria Falls. It was named for the naturalist John Kirk, who found and described it when he accompanied David Livingstone on his 1858 expedition. Kirk's name was also given to several other species which he was first to recognise and describe during his travels, including the Zanzibar Colobus monkey. After Livingtone's death, Kirk continued the missionary's work to get slavery abolished, and through his influence over the Sultan of Zanzibar, he succeeded in ending the East Africa slave trade. |
