Title: | LZmS_426V - Rainbow Falls & Danger Point at low water, Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, S Zambia |
Caption: | James Chapman (1831-1872) was a South African hunter, trader, explorer and photographer. From 1860 to 1864, he joined the English painter Thomas Baines on an expedition to explore the navigability of the Zambezi between Victoria Falls and river's outflow into the Indian Ocean. In 1868, he wrote of his appreciation of the Victoria Falls: "Nothing can be more delicately beautiful and pleasing to the eye than the milky streams, broken at the top by dividing rocks and widening to the base, pouring down in one unbroken flow of snowy whiteness from a height of upwards of 300 feet." Chapman also wrote about his experience of accompanying a painter on this exhibition - which has been exactly my own experience with one Quentin Allen, an artist & friend with whom I have travelled on many bush trips: "It was necessary to proceed farther to obtain a more extended view. One look for me is enough, but my nerves are sorely tired by Baines, who finding everywhere new beauties for his pencil, must needs drags me along to the very edge, he gazing with delight, I with terror, down into the lowest depths of the chasm..." I wonder if Baines, like Quentin, skipped around at the edge of most precipices, looking for the best view, but with boot laces left untied. |
