Title: | LZmS_295967 - After Dawn, Victoria Falls & Rainbow, Zambezi River, S Zambia |
Caption: | The painter Thomas Baines and James Chapman, the hunter-explorer, camped under a large tree on 22nd July 1862. They recorded that all night they heard the roaring of the great waterfall "like the dashing of a mighty surf upon a rockbound coast". In the morning, Chapman climbed a tree to view the distant clouds of falls spray. Baines described what his artist's eye saw that day: "We saw the water of the broad Zambesi glancing like a mirror ... while from below it clouds of spray and mist nearly a mile in extent rose out of the chasm into which the water fell... A light easterly wind just swayed their soft vapoury tops; the sun, still low, shed its softened light over the side exposed to it. Willingly could I have feasted my eye upon this distant vision for the day...". Thomas Baines - English painter & explorer, 1865 |
